Antique Brass Figure Button Brandon Tudor Nobleman 5/8 inch 17mm
Antique metal Figure sewing
button. Button pictures Brandon and is listed in the Big Book of Buttons, page
495, Plate 211 #9. The Big Book of Buttons also displays a paired button of Mary
Tudor, Plate 211 #8 (I do not have the Mary Tudor button). The identification of
the buttons was based on the story of the two lovers in "WhenÂ
Knighthood was in Flower" by Edwin Gaskoden. Charles Brandon was a young
nobleman, one of King Henry's favorites. Although Mary was married to the ill
King of France, Louis XII, she was widowed within a year and secretly married
Brandon without Henry's consent.
The brass design is cut out and backed by a darkened metal liner, with a shiny
liner under the pierced border, with a steel back and wire shank. Button
measures just over 5/8" diameter (17mm), back is japanned. Excellent
vintage condition. Very hard to find button.
