Antique Metal Fable Picture Button Eagle and the Stag 11/16 inch 17mm
Antique metal Fable sewing
button. Button pictures the Eagle and the Stag. Listed in the Big Book of
Buttons, page 376, Plate 154 #26. The Big Book of Buttons also displays a
different Eagle and the Stag button on Plate 153 #5. The BBB described the
following fable from Pilpay:
"During a time of drought, a stag, the leader of the herd, set out with his
family to find food and water. As the land became unfamiliar, he told the
females and young deer to wait safely in hiding while he scouted ahead. An eagle
who had been watching them, and who hoped to take one of the young deer for
himself, called to the stag, "Tell me where your family are hidden, and I
will lead them to where there is food and water." The stag, who was well
aware of the eagle's intentions, declined, saying "It is better to hunger
and thirst in safety, than to seek an easy way to abundance".
The brass design is cut out and backed by a darkened metal liner with a steel
back and wire shank. The wings and head of the eagle can be seen behind the
right antler of the stag (not your right... the stag's right). Button measures
just under 11/16" diameter (17mm), back is japanned. Some wear/corrosion to
the japanning otherwise the button is in very good vintage condition. Very hard
to find button.
