Embroidery Patterns from Dover Needlework Series ~ Victorian Needlepoint Designs
~ dated 1975, 36 pages, designs from Godey's Lady's Book and Peterson's
Magazine, edited by Rita Weiss. Those were the magazines where your grandmothers
and great-grandmothers found the outstanding designs for their needlework, both
plain and fancy. Contains 43 designs from the best of the authentic traditions.
There are strong central designs - a union with eagle and flags made for the
Centennial celebration of 1876, a bicyclist on an old-fashioned bicycle, horses,
cats, folk dancers, a swan, a greyhound, a deer head, a river and bridge scene,
a hound and deer scene, chimney sweeps, a brace of parrots, rose floral pattern,
daisy floral pattern, grape vine floral pattern; a card design that could be
used for boxes or other card paraphernalia; designs that were originally used
for slippers - a boy and father with ladder, monkeys-and-vines slipper, and an
elegant vine leaf slipper in five colors; overall patterns - stars,
fleur-de-lis, beetle overall pattern; small designs - a butterfly motif, a
rabbit, a heron; a needlework alphabet; and others.
Condition: Light wear, previous owners name on first page (very tiny) else pages clean and unmarked,
very good condition.
